Auto-follow electric golf caddies are the newest category in the market -- and the fastest growing. Instead of steering by hand or remote, the caddy tracks your position and follows you automatically. You walk naturally. Your bag follows.
But not all follow technology is the same. The three caddies we carry use two fundamentally different approaches: UWB (Ultra-Wideband) beacon tracking and AI camera-based visual follow. Understanding the difference helps you pick the right one.
How UWB Follow Works
UWB (Ultra-Wideband) is a radio-based positioning technology -- the same tech Apple uses in AirTags. A small transmitter clips to your belt or pocket. The caddy has UWB receivers that calculate your exact position with centimeter-level accuracy.
The caddy maintains a set distance behind you (typically 3-5 feet) and adjusts speed to match your walking pace. Turn left, it turns left. Stop, it stops. Start walking again, it follows.
UWB Pros
- Precise positioning -- centimeter-level accuracy regardless of lighting
- Works in any weather -- rain, fog, direct sun, dusk -- signal is radio-based
- No camera to clean -- no lens to wipe, no visual obstructions
- Consistent behavior -- same performance on hole 1 and hole 18
UWB Limitations
- No obstacle awareness -- the caddy follows your position but does not see the course. If a bunker or cart is between you and the caddy, it does not know.
- Requires wearable beacon -- you need to clip or carry the transmitter
- Line of sight dependent -- signal can weaken behind large obstacles
Our UWB Follow Caddies
NAVEE Birdie 3X ($1,499) -- UWB auto-follow plus remote control mode. Dual 120W motors, 11-inch all-terrain tires, 36-hole battery. The Birdie 3 ($1,199) is the same platform without follow for $500 less.
Cart Tek Formula Pursuit ($1,895) -- UWB follow, remote control, AND manual steering in one caddy. Aviation-grade aluminum on the proven Formula platform. The only three-mode caddy available.
How AI Camera Follow Works
AI camera follow uses a forward-facing camera with computer vision to identify and track you visually. The caddy literally sees you -- your body shape, your clothing, your position relative to the course. It processes this in real time to follow you and navigate around obstacles.
AI Vision Pros
- Obstacle avoidance -- the camera sees bunkers, carts, other golfers, and navigates around them
- No wearable required -- just walk. The caddy recognizes you by sight.
- Course awareness -- the caddy understands its environment, not just your position
- Gesture control -- wave to stop, point to direct (model dependent)
AI Vision Limitations
- Lighting dependent -- extreme glare, heavy fog, or very low light can affect tracking
- Camera lens maintenance -- rain droplets or mud on the lens degrades performance
- Newer technology -- less field-tested than UWB in real golf course conditions
- Higher price point -- camera hardware and AI processing add cost

- You want obstacle avoidance -- the caddy navigates around hazards
- You do not want to wear or carry a beacon
- You value gesture control and AI-level course awareness
- You play mostly in clear weather conditions

Do You Even Need Auto-Follow?
Honest answer: not everyone does. If you are happy with a remote control caddy, you already walk freely and steer from distance. Auto-follow is for golfers who want to eliminate even the remote from the equation -- just walk and play.
If you are torn between remote and follow, the Formula Pursuit gives you both in one caddy for $1,895.
