Lithium vs Lead Acid Golf Caddy Batteries: Which Is Better?

Share

If you are shopping for an electric golf caddy in 2026, you have probably noticed: every serious caddy now runs on lithium-ion. Lead-acid (SLA) batteries still exist on the cheapest caddies, but they are disappearing fast -- and for good reason.

This guide covers the real-world differences between lithium and lead-acid batteries for electric golf caddies, why we sell lithium-only, and what it means for your wallet over time.

The Numbers: Lithium vs Lead-Acid

Spec Lithium-Ion Lead-Acid (SLA)
Charge time ~2 hours ~8 hours
Charge cycles 1,000+ ~250
Weight (typical caddy battery) 4-6 lbs 15-20 lbs
Lifespan 5-7 years 1-2 years
Memory effect None Yes (loses capacity)
Maintenance None Periodic (prevent sulfation)
Self-discharge rate Low (~2%/month) High (~5-15%/month)
Consistent power Yes (flat discharge curve) No (weakens as it drains)
Upfront cost Higher Lower
Cost over 5 years Lower (1 battery) Higher (3-5 batteries)

Why Charge Time Matters More Than You Think

Two hours vs eight hours sounds like an abstract spec. In practice, it changes how you use your caddy:

  • Morning round, afternoon round: With lithium, plug in at lunch and you are full by the time you tee off again. With lead-acid, you need a second battery or you are stuck.
  • Forgot to charge last night: Lithium gets you a meaningful charge in 30-45 minutes. Lead-acid in 30 minutes gives you almost nothing.
  • Tournament days: Practice round in the morning, competitive round in the afternoon. Lithium handles back-to-back. Lead-acid cannot.

Why Weight Matters on the Course

A typical lead-acid caddy battery weighs 15-20 lbs. A lithium battery doing the same job weighs 4-6 lbs. That is 10-15 lbs less that the motor has to move -- which means:

  • Less strain on the motor -- longer motor life, less gear wear
  • Better hill performance -- the motor moves your bag, not a heavy battery
  • Easier to lift -- you are loading this in and out of your trunk 2-4 times per week
  • Better balance -- lighter battery means the caddy is less top-heavy

The Cart Tek Galaxy Titan weighs 16 lbs total with its lithium battery. A lead-acid battery alone weighs nearly that much.

The Real Cost Comparison

Lead-acid looks cheaper upfront. Over time, it is significantly more expensive:

5-Year Cost: Golfer Playing 2x/Week

Lithium: 1 battery x $200-400 = $200-400 total
(~200 cycles/year x 5 years = 1,000 cycles. Battery still has capacity remaining.)

Lead-Acid: 3-5 batteries x $80-150 = $240-750 total
(~200 cycles/year. Battery dies at ~250 cycles = replacement every 15 months.)

Result: Lithium costs the same or less over 5 years -- and you never deal with a dead battery mid-season.

Performance Difference: Flat vs Sloping Discharge

This is the spec most people overlook. Lithium batteries have a flat discharge curve -- they deliver consistent power from 100% charge down to near empty. Your caddy runs at the same speed on hole 18 as it did on hole 1.

Lead-acid batteries have a sloping discharge curve -- power drops gradually as the battery drains. By the back nine, your caddy is noticeably slower, struggles more on hills, and may not finish 18 holes on a demanding course.

Storage and Off-Season

Lithium batteries self-discharge at roughly 2% per month. Store your caddy in October, and the battery still has meaningful charge in April. No maintenance required -- just charge it up before your first round.

Lead-acid batteries self-discharge at 5-15% per month and are prone to sulfation -- permanent capacity loss when stored in a discharged state. Leave a lead-acid battery over winter without periodic charging and it may be dead by spring.

Safety

Both battery types are safe when used as intended. Lithium batteries include built-in BMS (Battery Management System) circuitry that prevents overcharging, over-discharging, overheating, and short circuits. Lead-acid batteries can leak acid if damaged or overcharged.

For air travel: TSA allows lithium batteries under 100Wh in carry-on luggage. Most caddy lithium batteries fall under this threshold. Check your specific model's specs and airline policy before flying.

Why We Sell Lithium Only

Every electric golf caddy at Top Shelf Golf uses lithium-ion batteries. We do not carry lead-acid models.

The reason is simple: we would not put a lead-acid battery on our own caddies, so we will not sell one to you. Lithium is lighter, lasts longer, charges faster, performs better, and costs less over time. There is no scenario where lead-acid is the better choice for a golfer buying a quality electric caddy in 2026.
