Golf Simulator Projector Calculator — FAQ
How do I calculate the right projector distance for my golf simulator?
Throw ratio is multiplied by the projector's required image width, not always the physical screen width. On tall 4:3 or 1:1 golf screens, a 16:9-native projector may need a wider image to fill the screen height. Our calculator accounts for that geometry and reports any horizontal overspill.
What throw ratio do I need for a golf simulator?
Most golf simulator setups work best with a short-throw ratio between 0.49 and 0.90. Short-throw projectors (under 0.60) can be mounted very close to the screen — as little as 3–5 feet — which prevents your body from casting shadows during your swing. Models like the BenQ LK830ST (0.50) and Optoma GT2400HDR (0.49) are popular choices for tight spaces.
What screen size do I need for my golf simulator room?
The ideal screen size depends on your room width and ceiling height. For most home setups, a screen between 100″ and 150″ diagonal works well. Allow at least 6 inches of clearance on each side and 12 inches from the ceiling. Our calculator computes the maximum recommended screen size based on your exact room dimensions.
Should I get a 4K or 1080p projector for my golf simulator?
For screen sizes under 120 inches, 1080p is excellent and more budget-friendly. For screens 120 inches and larger, 4K provides noticeably sharper detail, especially on course textures and HUD readouts. Our 4K options range from the BenQ TK710STi at $2,199 to the professional BenQ LK936ST at $4,899.
Laser vs. lamp projector — which is better for golf simulators?
Laser projectors are strongly recommended for golf simulators. They offer 20,000–30,000 hours of lamp life (vs. 4,000–10,000 for traditional lamps), instant on/off, consistent brightness over time, and no replacement bulb costs. Most of our catalog is laser-based. The main lamp exceptions are the BenQ TH671ST ($949) and Optoma 4K400STx ($2,289), which offer good value at lower price points.
How far should the golfer stand from the impact screen?
The golfer should stand 8 to 12 feet from the impact screen, depending on club length and swing style. Our calculator accounts for this by reserving golfer space when determining which projectors fit your room depth. The projector must fit between the screen and the golfer without obstructing the swing path.
