Choosing a golf simulator projector is the most important equipment decision in your build. The right projector gives you a bright, sharp, shadow-free image that makes indoor golf feel real. The wrong one wastes money on specs you don't need — or leaves you with an image that kills the experience.
As an authorized dealer for both BenQ and Optoma, we carry 25 golf simulator projectors ranging from $909 to $15,439. We've sold thousands of them and helped customers match projectors to every kind of room. This guide covers everything you need to know.
The 5 Things That Actually Matter
Ignore most projector specs. For golf simulators, only these five matter:
- Throw ratio — determines how far the projector sits from the screen. Lower = closer. Ultra-short throw (0.49-0.52:1) mounts inches from the screen. Short throw (0.65-0.95:1) needs 5-8 feet.
- Brightness (lumens) — 3,000+ for dark rooms, 4,000+ for rooms with ambient light, 5,000+ for commercial venues. Read our complete lumens guide.
- Resolution — 1080p is excellent for screens under 120 inches. 4K matters on 130"+ screens. Read our 4K vs 1080p comparison.
- Light source — laser (30,000 hrs, no maintenance), LED (20,000-30,000 hrs), or lamp (4,000-15,000 hrs, needs replacement). Read our light source guide.
- Dust protection — IP5X or IP6X sealed engines last longer in dusty basements and garages.

BenQ vs Optoma: Which Brand?
We carry both and recommend both. The honest differences:
- Optoma: Wider price range ($909-$15,439), full commercial ProScene lineup, Golf Sim Picture Mode on all laser models, more ultra-short-throw options
- BenQ: Golf Mode color calibration, more LED options, 4K models with zoom + lens shift for installation flexibility
- Same price: MAP pricing means both brands cost the same at any authorized dealer. You're choosing features, not discounts.

Room Setup Guide
Your projector choice depends on your room. Here's what to measure before you buy:
- Ceiling height: Need 9+ feet for comfortable swings. Mount the projector above or behind the hitting area.
- Room depth: Ultra-short throw (0.49-0.52:1) needs 3-5 feet from screen. Short throw (0.65-0.95:1) needs 5-10 feet. Standard throw (1.13+) needs 11-15 feet.
- Screen size: 100-120 inches is standard for home. 130-150 for premium. 200+ for commercial.
- Ambient light: Windows? Overhead lights on during play? More light = more lumens needed.
