The PRGR Black Pocket ($229) and the Garmin Approach R10 ($499.99) are the two most popular budget launch monitors in golf, and they could not be more different. The PRGR is a standalone pocket radar with a built-in screen that measures five data points. The Garmin is a phone-connected system that tracks 14 metrics, records swing video, and doubles as a golf simulator. One costs half as much as the other. The question is whether you need the extra $270 worth of capability.
We sell both at Top Shelf Golf. This side-by-side comparison helps you compare exactly what each unit measures, what it does not measure, how they differ in accuracy and setup, and which one fits your game. Every spec is verified against the manufacturer's official documentation.
How They Track Your Swing
Both launch monitors use Doppler radar to measure speed and movement, but they use it very differently.
The PRGR uses a single Doppler radar emitter operating at 24 GHz. It sits 4.5 feet behind the ball and captures ball speed and club speed directly. Carry and total distance are calculated from those speed readings using an internal algorithm. It does not track the ball after launch — it reads speed at impact and estimates the rest.
The Garmin R10 uses a more advanced radar system that sits 6-8 feet behind the ball. It directly measures ball speed, club head speed, launch angle, and launch direction. From those measured values, it calculates spin rate, spin axis, club path, face angle, and distances using Garmin's proprietary algorithms. The R10 tracks more of the swing, but many of its headline metrics are still calculated rather than directly measured.
Data Points: 5 vs 14
| Metric | PRGR HS-130A | Garmin R10 | How It's Captured |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ball Speed | Yes | Yes | Measured (both) |
| Club Head Speed | Yes | Yes | Measured (both) |
| Carry Distance | Yes | Yes | Calculated (both) |
| Total Distance | Yes | Yes | Calculated (both) |
| Smash Factor | Yes | Yes | Calculated (both) |
| Launch Angle | No | Yes | Measured (R10) |
| Launch Direction | No | Yes | Measured (R10) |
| Spin Rate | No | Yes | Calculated (R10) |
| Spin Axis | No | Yes | Calculated (R10) |
| Club Face Angle | No | Yes | Calculated (R10) |
| Club Path Angle | No | Yes | Calculated (R10) |
| Angle of Attack | No | Yes | Calculated (R10) |
| Apex Height | No | Yes | Calculated (R10) |
| Deviation Distance | No | Yes | Calculated (R10) |
The "How It's Captured" column matters. The Garmin R10 reports 14 metrics, but only four are directly measured by radar: ball speed, club head speed, launch angle, and launch direction. The remaining ten — including spin rate, club path, and face angle — are estimated by Garmin's algorithms. This is a meaningful distinction when evaluating accuracy claims.
Accuracy: What Garmin Publishes
Garmin publishes the following accuracy specifications for the R10 on their official product page:
- Ball speed: ±1 mph
- Club head speed: ±3 mph
- Launch angle: ±1 degree
- Launch direction: ±1 degree
- Carry distance: ±5 yards
- Club face angle: ±2 degrees
- Club path angle: ±4 degrees
- Angle of attack: ±3 degrees
- Apex height: ±5 feet
PRGR does not publish comparable accuracy specifications. Based on our product page and customer feedback, PRGR speed readings are consistent and reliable. Distance readings are calculated estimates and may vary 5-10 yards from actual carry on solid strikes.

Software and Simulation
This is where the gap between the two devices is largest.
The PRGR has no software at all. No app, no connectivity, no simulation capability. The built-in LCD is the entire interface. This is a feature, not a limitation — for golfers who want zero friction between swinging and seeing numbers.
The Garmin R10 connects to the Garmin Golf app (free, iOS and Android) via Bluetooth. The app displays all 13 metrics, tracks session history, and offers Swing Capture — automatic video recording of each swing with data overlays. A Garmin Golf subscription ($99/year) unlocks Home Tee Hero with over 42,000 virtual courses. The R10 also connects to third-party simulation software including GSPro, E6 Connect, Awesome Golf, and E6 Apex for full golf simulator experiences on a PC.
The R10 ships with 6 E6 Connect courses and 17 ranges (iOS only) at no additional cost.

Which One Should You Buy?
Buy the PRGR ($229) if:
- You want speed and distance numbers without touching a phone
- You are doing speed training (SuperSpeed, etc.) and need a reliable clubhead speed reading
- You hit at the range or into a net and want instant feedback with zero setup
- You have never owned a launch monitor and want to start with the lowest risk investment
- Simplicity matters more than data volume
Buy the Garmin R10 ($499.99) if:
- You want to build a golf simulator (GSPro, E6 Connect)
- You want launch angle, spin, and club delivery metrics — even if they are calculated rather than directly measured
- You want to play virtual courses (42,000+ via Garmin Golf)
- You want swing video capture with data overlays
- You are willing to use a phone app as your primary interface
The $270 difference between these two is not about accuracy — both measure speed reliably. The difference is about what else you can do with the data. If you just want numbers, the PRGR delivers. If you want an ecosystem — simulation, video, course play, coaching — the R10 is worth the upgrade.
