This guide turns one bay into a complete, buyable package: a full parts list, plus the three problems a garage adds that a spare bedroom never would.
What a garage bay gets right
A garage bay's depth is its superpower: at about 20 feet deep, a single bay gives you roughly 19 feet of usable depth, which clears the minimum depth requirement of every launch monitor we sell for simulator use. Usable depth is room depth minus 1 foot, because the screen needs standoff from the wall. Nineteen feet clears the Full Swing KIT's 18-foot requirement, the deepest in our lineup, and comfortably clears the 16 feet that behind-ball hybrid (radar plus camera) units like the FlightScope Mevo Gen2 and overhead units like the Uneekor EYE XO demand.
Compare that to the typical spare room, where 12 feet of depth restricts you to beside-ball monitors, and the garage's appeal is obvious. In a garage, the depth check stops filtering your options and you choose tracking technology on merit. Width is the quieter limit: an 11-foot-wide bay allows a screen up to 10 feet wide (maximum screen width is room width minus 1 foot), which is plenty, but it means the enclosure should be matched to your measured width from the sizes offered, not to a wish. A two-car garage relaxes the width limit and changes nothing else in this article; the parts list below works in either.
The three problems a garage adds to a simulator build
A garage adds three problems a spare bedroom never poses: door hardware that lowers the real ceiling, ambient light that washes out the image, and a concrete floor that punishes joints and equipment.
Ceiling height and what hangs from it
Measure your garage ceiling to the lowest obstruction, not to the drywall, because the door tracks, the opener, and the lighting are the real ceiling. Many garages run 8 to 9 feet nominal, and then the door hardware takes a bite out of the middle of the room, often exactly where you want to swing. Before buying anything, stand where the mat will go and take a full-speed driver swing. If the club or your hands threaten the opener rail, shift the hitting position deeper into the bay; with 19 usable feet, you have room to slide the whole layout that a bedroom build never gets.
Low garage ceilings also push the launch monitor decision toward floor units. Beside-ball monitors like the ones in the parts list below need nothing above your head. If your bay has a tall ceiling and you want overhead tracking, the depth is already there; the ceiling is the only question left.
Light control
Ambient light is the difference between a vivid simulator and a washed-out disappointment, and garages are the worst-case room: a wall of glass panels in the door, gaps at the edges, and sessions that happen in daylight. You fight this from both directions. Block what light you can, and buy brightness for the rest. The floor itself
Concrete is unforgiving in both directions: it is hard on your joints through a thin mat, and it is hard on balls and club heads on any mishit that reaches it. The fix is coverage. A quality mat where you stand and hit, and a landing pad in front of the screen where balls drop after impact. Assembling the list yourself is what keeps a garage build cheap, but it is not the only way in. The garage simulator install, in one weekend
A garage simulator installs in six steps over one weekend: measure, enclosure, mat and landing pad, launch monitor, projector, then software, in that order, because each step verifies the one before it:
- Clear and measure. Empty the bay, then measure width, depth, and height to the lowest obstruction along the actual hitting line. Take the driver swing test at the planned mat position before assembling anything.
- Assemble the enclosure. Position it for the straightest possible ball flight line, then confirm you still have your monitor's minimum depth between screen and hitting position with room behind you.
- Place the mat and landing pad. Set the hitting position, then stand on the mat and repeat the swing test, because the mat's thickness just raised you toward the opener rail.
- Set the launch monitor beside the mat and level it per the manufacturer's alignment procedure.
- Mount the projector last. Measure your actual final image width, multiply by the throw ratio, and mount at that distance. Drilling first and measuring second is the classic garage-build error.
- Connect software and calibrate with a short session of easy wedge shots before you trust a number.
The upgrade path from here

What the garage build leaves out, on purpose
This build deliberately leaves out three things: a dedicated computer, a premium enclosure, and a 4K projector. No dedicated computer, because most garage builds start on a machine the household already owns, and money spent on a SurfThing before you know your usage pattern is money spent guessing. No premium enclosure, because in a garage the enclosure's job is screen support and light backdrop, and the C-Series does both; the step up to the Carl's Place Pro Golf Simulator Enclosure belongs to rooms where finish quality is the point. And no 4K projector, because in a bright bay, lumens beat pixels. Getting the layout right
Lay the bay out from the door wall inward: screen and enclosure nearest the garage door or the back wall (whichever gives the straightest run), then the landing pad, then the hitting mat with the monitor beside it, then open space behind you. With roughly 19 usable feet and a beside-ball monitor needing 10, the numbers leave about 9 feet beyond the monitor's minimum. The fit rules stop there: they do not place your hitting position or check clearance from the opener rail, so verify both in the bay, and use the spare depth to move the hitting position away from the rail and give your follow-through honest room.
Then check the projection triangle before drilling anything. Throw distance is throw ratio multiplied by image width: the GT2400HDR at 0.496 needs 4.96 feet for a 10-foot-wide image.
