What to Buy First for a Golf Simulator, and In What Order

The most common expensive mistake in home golf simulation is buying the launch monitor first. It feels like the right first purchase because it is the exciting one, the component with the reviews and the rivalries. But the launch monitor is downstream of decisions you have not made yet, and when it arrives before those decisions, it routinely arrives wrong: wrong depth requirement for the room, wrong placement type for the ceiling, or wrong category entirely. This guide gives you the buying order that prevents all of that, and the reasons behind each step.

The correct order, in one list

Buy a golf simulator in this order: measure the room, then choose the screen and enclosure, then the launch monitor, then the hitting area, then the projector and computer, then software and accessories. Each step constrains the next, which is exactly why the sequence cannot be shuffled.

  1. The room. Costs nothing, decides everything.
  2. Screen and enclosure. Sized directly from the room.
  3. Launch monitor. Filtered by the room's depth and ceiling.
  4. Hitting area. Mat and landing pad, sized to the space that remains.
  5. Picture and power. Projector chosen against the screen; computer chosen against the software.
  6. Software and extras. Chosen last, against the launch monitor you actually bought.

This is more than editorial opinion; it is how our Golf Simulator Builder is built. Its steps run in a fixed order: your space, a space check, screen and enclosure, launch monitor, hitting area, then picture and power. The tool forces the sequence because the sequence is the method.

Step one is a tape measure, not a credit card

Your room makes most of your buying decisions before you spend a dollar, through two subtractions and one multiplication. Usable depth is room depth minus 1 foot, because the screen needs standoff from the wall. Maximum screen width is room width minus 1 foot. Projector throw distance is throw ratio multiplied by image width. Measure depth, width, and ceiling height to the lowest obstruction, and take a full-speed swing with your longest club where the mat will go before trusting any number.

Those numbers filter hardware immediately. A 12-foot-deep room has 11 feet of usable depth, which excludes every launch monitor requiring more: the Garmin Approach R10 needs 14 feet, the FlightScope Mevo Gen2 needs 16, the Full Swing KIT needs 18, and every overhead-mounted unit in our lineup needs 16. Why the screen comes before the launch monitor

The screen and enclosure are second because they are the room's translation into hardware, and two later purchases depend on them. The projector must be chosen against the screen: throw distance is throw ratio times image width, so until the image width exists, no projector can be evaluated. A 0.496 throw ratio needs 4.96 feet for a 10-foot image and 5.95 feet for a 12-foot image. Buy the projector before the screen and you are guessing at the only number that determines where it can mount.

The enclosure also fixes the geometry the launch monitor has to live in: where the hitting position sits relative to the screen, and how much runway remains behind it. The launch monitor: third, and only third

By the time you shop for a launch monitor, your room has already shortlisted it, and that is the entire point of buying it third. Depth is the first filter. With 11 feet of usable depth, your candidates are beside-ball units with 10-foot minimums: the SkyTrak ST MAX, Bushnell LPi, Uneekor EYE MINI LITE, Bushnell Launch Pro, Uneekor EYE MINI, Foresight GC3S, Garmin Approach R50, and Foresight GC3, among others. With 19 feet of usable depth, the rest of the lineup joins: behind-ball radar and hybrid (radar plus camera) units, and every overhead unit, camera and photometric alike. Placement is the second filter: overhead units need a ceiling that can spare the space, beside-ball units need floor space to the side, behind-ball units need their runway.

The wrong-category trap

One more filter matters before price: whether the unit drives simulator software at all. The Swing Caddie SC200 Plus and SC300i are practice launch monitors. They report ball data, and they do that job well, but they do not power a simulator, so neither belongs in a full-build plan at any price. Why launch-monitor-first goes wrong

Buying the launch monitor first fails because it is the component with the most external requirements and the least flexibility about them. Three real failure patterns:

  • The depth miss. A buyer with a 13-foot room falls for a behind-ball unit that needs 16 or 18 feet. The unit works exactly as advertised, in somebody else's house. Depth requirements in our lineup run from 6 feet (PRGR Black Pocket) to 18 feet (Full Swing KIT), and no review mentions your room.
  • The ceiling miss. A buyer with an 8-foot basement orders an overhead-mounted unit. Every overhead monitor we carry also needs 16 feet of depth, so low rooms tend to fail this purchase twice.
  • The category miss. A buyer grabs a practice-only unit at a great price, then discovers there is no simulator to build around it.

Each mistake costs weeks and restocking friction at best. The fix costs one evening with a tape measure.

Steps four and five: the hitting area, then picture and power

The mat comes fourth because it should be chosen against the layout, not before it: a beside-ball monitor needs the mat and unit to sit side by side at the same level, and mat thickness even affects your effective ceiling height, since you stand on top of it. Picture and power come fifth, and by now both are nearly automatic. The screen fixed your image width, so the throw math shortlists projectors by itself; run the numbers in the projector calculator. Brightness and resolution are the remaining choices, and they are preferences, not compatibility risks. The computer, if you need one, is chosen against the software you intend to run. Last: software, subscriptions, and the small stuff

Software is the final purchase because it must match the launch monitor you actually own, not the one you almost bought. Check your monitor's supported software list, then subscribe. GSPro and E6 Connect are yearly subscriptions, and TGC 2019 is PC-only. Buying a subscription before the monitor is a small version of the same disease this whole article treats: committing downstream before the upstream decision exists.

Which simulator purchases can safely combine

Once the room is measured, the screen and launch monitor can be ordered together, because the room's two derived numbers (usable depth and maximum screen width) constrain each of them independently. The sequence describes decision order, not necessarily six separate shipping days, and some steps combine safely once the upstream decision is locked. The mat and landing pad always travel together. The projector can join the same order the moment the screen size is final, since throw distance depends only on image width and ratio. The combinations to refuse are the ones that jump the sequence: a launch monitor ordered before the room is measured, software subscribed before the monitor is chosen, or an enclosure sized to a screen you have not confirmed fits the wall. A good test before any checkout: for each item in the cart, name the already-decided fact that justifies it. If the justification is a guess about a future decision, take it out of the cart.

The buying sequence, worked through one real room

Applied to a 12-foot-wide, 15-foot-deep basement room with a 9-foot ceiling, the buying order produces a complete simulator with every component vetted by the one before it. Step one, the math: usable depth is 14 feet (15 minus 1), maximum screen width is 11 feet (12 minus 1), and the driver swing test passes. It still deserves the biggest share of the budget; it just cannot be the first purchase.
