The Carl's Place HotShot is the golf hitting mat most of our simulator customers buy. Its hitting strip lifts out and a different one drops in. Buy the SIGPRO Softy for the thickest hitting strip on a concrete floor, the Real Feel Country Club Elite for a real wooden tee with nothing to replace, and a Fiberbuilt studio mat for a modular rubber-base build with a choice of hitting surfaces. The decision path on this page matches each one to a room.

A strip mat has a channel cut into the stance turf and a separate hitting strip that drops into it, so the hitting zone is a replaceable part. Carl's Place HotShot and SIGPRO Softy work this way. A fixed-turf mat such as the Real Feel Country Club Elite is one dense turf with no insert; you rotate the mat to spread the wear instead of replacing a strip. Fiberbuilt sits in between: a modular rubber base with hitting panels and stance panels that come apart without tools.

Size the mat to the width of the room you swing in. A center-hitting mat, where a right-hander and a left-hander share a hitting zone in the middle, needs a room at least 14 feet wide. A narrower room takes a single-hitting mat or an all-turf mat: the Fiberbuilt 7' x 4' fits in a room 9 feet wide with its hitting panel centered, and an all-turf mat such as the Real Feel Country Club Elite only has to fit the room. A mat that is too firm can be. Carl's Place says mats that are too firm can be tough on your joints, and Fiberbuilt says traditional turf mats offer very little impact absorption. The mats here answer that in different ways: a foam strip in the Carl's Place HotShot, a foam core inside the SIGPRO Softy strip, a rubber base under every Fiberbuilt studio mat, and a high-density foam backing on the Real Feel Country Club Elite. If your joints are the priority, start with the HotShot foam strip or the SIGPRO Softy.

Yes. A slab has no give, so the mat and whatever sits under it do all the shock absorption. The SIGPRO Softy strip is 2 1/2 inches thick and the Super Softy mat is 2 3/4 inches, the HotShot foam divot strip is the one Carl's Place calls most forgiving on your joints, and Fiberbuilt's modular rubber base is built for indoor or outdoor use. A Tour landing pad covers the slab between the mat and the screen.

The Real Feel Country Club Elite takes a real wooden tee directly in the turf, and so does the Fiberbuilt Tee Box with its Performance Turf. The Carl's Place HotShot takes a real tee only with the standard strip; Carl's Place makes indoor tees for the foam and gel strips. SIGPRO Softy and Super Softy take a real tee, the Softy LITE does not. Fiberbuilt Player Preferred mats use a friction-fit tee holder.

They can, which is why the makers design for it. Carl's Place says mats that are too soft can hide bad strikes and give inconsistent shot data. Fiberbuilt says its Player Preferred surface is launch monitor tested, and Real Feel says the Country Club Elite is engineered to minimize bounce and false readings. Fiberbuilt guarantees its Fiberbuilt Grass hitting panel for 300,000 shots and says its hitting panels can be rotated 180 degrees as wear shows. On a strip mat you replace the strip, not the mat: Carl's Place and SIGPRO both sell replacement hitting strips. Carl's Place notes that golfers who often hit behind the ball may see faster wear on the gel strip. Real Feel's FAQ tells Country Club Elite owners to rotate the mat for even wear.

Fiberbuilt says its Performance Turf is UV resistant for indoor or outdoor use and that its mats belong on a firm, level surface such as concrete, packed gravel, asphalt or a solid deck, not bare ground or grass. The Real Feel Country Club Elite is made for indoor and outdoor use, and The Net Return Pro Turf can be used indoors or outside and rolls up for storage. SIGPRO Softy mats are listed for indoor use and storage.

A landing pad is the turf that covers the simulator floor between the hitting mat and the impact screen. It cushions balls as they drop, cuts the noise and keeps balls from rolling under the screen. The Tour Golf Simulator Landing Pad is cut to order from 4' x 8' up to 8' x 20'. It is not a hitting surface, so pair it with a hitting mat.
