The real question is what a complete, working setup costs, and the honest answer is that we can build a good one at $5,000, a serious one at $10,000, and a no-excuses one at $20,000. Below are three complete parts lists, one per tier, with an explanation of why the money goes where it does at each level.

The allocation rule that makes budgets work

At every budget, the launch monitor deserves the largest single share of the money, because it is the only component that decides whether your numbers are true. A projector affects how the shot looks. A mat affects how the strike feels. The launch monitor decides whether the 240-yard drive on the screen was actually a 240-yard drive. Everything else in the build serves the data that one device produces.

The corollary matters just as much: never starve the monitor to fund the picture. A pocket practice unit feeding a flagship projector is a beautiful display of unreliable golf. When forced to choose, take better tracking over better pixels every time. You can upgrade a projector later without touching the rest of the build; swapping launch monitor tiers often changes your room requirements and your software.

Two other rules shape everything below. First, the enclosure and screen are safety equipment as much as they are display equipment, so they get real money before the projector does. Second, minimum depth requirements filter what you can buy before price does. The $5,000 build

For a budget around $5,000 you get a complete simulator built around the SkyTrak ST MAX, a hybrid radar and camera unit that sits beside the ball and needs only 10 feet of depth. This is the cheapest build we would call a real simulator rather than a compromise.

Why these picks. The ST MAX takes 41 percent of the budget, and it earns it: beside-ball placement keeps the depth requirement at 10 feet, so this build fits rooms that kill most radar units. What this build asks of you: a computer you already own to run the software, and a room with at least 11 feet of real depth (the builder counts usable depth as room depth minus 1 foot, and the ST MAX needs 10). Cheaper monitor options exist. The Swing Caddie SC4 PRO and Garmin Approach R10 both drive simulator software and both cut the build cost further, but the SC4 PRO needs 12 feet of depth and the R10 needs 14, so the cheaper monitors paradoxically demand bigger rooms. If those fit and the budget is hard, they are legitimate. Skip anything labeled practice-only; the Swing Caddie SC200 Plus and SC300i cannot drive a simulator at all.

The Carl's Place Pro enclosure is the single biggest jump from the $5K tier. It costs more than triple the C-Series and you feel it every session: this is the component you physically stand inside for every shot. The BenQ TK710STi brings a 4K laser image at 3,200 lumens. This build still assumes you supply the computer. That is the tier's deliberate omission: a dedicated simulator PC is a real cost, and at $10,000 the money is better spent on tracking and structure than on hardware many buyers already own.

The $20,000 build

For a budget around $20,000 you get the build with no asterisks: overhead camera tracking with nothing on the floor, a curved enclosure, a 5,100-lumen 4K projector with real lens shift, a studio-grade mat, and a dedicated simulator computer included. Nothing in this list is a placeholder for a future upgrade.

The EYE XO mounts overhead, which changes the daily experience more than any spec sheet suggests: no unit beside the ball to align, no device to trip over, both left- and right-handed players hitting without moving anything. Alternate paths at this tier, for different priorities. What carries over when you upgrade

Buy the $5,000 build well and roughly a third of it survives every future upgrade, which changes how you should think about the entry tier. The mat, the landing pad, and a correctly sized enclosure do not care which launch monitor feeds the screen; the Real Feel Country Club Elite from the $5K list is still doing its job in a $20K room. The components that get replaced on the way up are the launch monitor and the projector, so those are the two purchases where buying the cheapest viable option is a legitimate strategy rather than a false economy.

Software sits in the middle. Subscriptions like GSPro are annual, so an upgrade path costs you nothing there, but supported hardware lists differ by title. When you swap monitors, re-check that your software supports the new unit before the old one ships out. The one component that punishes upgrading is the enclosure: it is bulky, sized to a specific room, and disruptive to replace. Buy the enclosure for the room you will still have in five years, even at the entry tier.

What improves between simulator budget tiers

Moving from the $5,000 tier to the $10,000 tier buys certainty, and moving from $10,000 to $20,000 buys convenience, not better golf. At the first step, photometric tracking, a structural enclosure, and a 4K image all serve the same goal of removing doubt between the shot you hit and the shot you see. At the second, overhead tracking, a dedicated computer, and lens shift do not make the data much better; they make every session start faster and run smoother, forever.

What does not improve between tiers is the golf. A well-fitted $5,000 build teaches you as much about your swing as the $20,000 build does. Spend to the tier your room and your patience justify, then stop. One warning for list-tinkerers: budget tiers fail when the money fights itself. A practice-only monitor next to a premium projector, a 16-foot-depth monitor bought for a 12-foot room, a 4K projector dimmer than the space needs. Every component above was chosen against the others, not in isolation.
