Will a Golf Simulator Fit Your Room? A Full-Setup Fit Check

Most golf simulator sizing guides answer the wrong question. They tell you what screen fits, or what projector fits, or how much room one launch monitor needs. Nobody buys a screen. You buy a complete setup, and the whole thing has to fit at once: the screen against the wall, the hitting area behind it, the launch monitor in its required position, and the projector at its required throw distance. This article runs three real rooms through the exact fit rules our Golf Simulator Builder uses, and shows you precisely which equipment survives each room.

The three numbers that decide everything

A complete golf simulator fits your room when three numbers work out: usable depth (room depth minus 1 foot), maximum screen width (room width minus 1 foot), and projector throw distance (throw ratio multiplied by image width). That is the entire model. Our builder does not use a more complicated formula, and neither should you.

Here is what each number does:

  • Usable depth is your room depth minus 1 foot. The screen cannot sit flat against the wall; it needs clearance behind it to absorb ball strikes. What remains is the space your launch monitor, your swing, and your projector share.
  • Maximum screen width is your room width minus 1 foot. Screens need breathing room at the edges for the enclosure frame and for mishits that catch the border.
  • Throw distance is the projector's throw ratio multiplied by the image width. A projector with a 0.496 throw ratio filling a 10-foot-wide image sits 4.96 feet from the screen. That distance has to exist inside your usable depth, and the projector cannot sit where your club travels.

Every launch monitor also carries a minimum depth requirement, and this is where most rooms fail. The requirement ranges from 6 feet for the PRGR Black Pocket to 18 feet for the Full Swing KIT. If your usable depth is below a monitor's minimum, that monitor is out, no matter how much you like its reviews.

How the fit check actually works

The builder walks the same sequence every time: your space first, then a space check, then screen and enclosure, then launch monitor, then hitting area, then picture and power. Room dimensions come first on purpose. Every later choice is filtered by them.

Run the same sequence by hand:

  1. Measure room depth, width, and ceiling height. Measure to the lowest obstruction, not the drywall. A duct or a garage door track is your real ceiling.
  2. Subtract 1 foot from depth. That is usable depth.
  3. Subtract 1 foot from width. That is your maximum screen width.
  4. Cross off every launch monitor whose minimum depth exceeds your usable depth.
  5. Check that your projector's throw distance (ratio times image width) fits inside your usable depth. That is the last check the fit math makes; confirming the projector sits clear of your swing path is a job you do at the mounting spot, not a box the math ticks for you.

A few measuring habits save real money. Measure depth along the exact line the ball will fly, not along the clearest wall. Measure ceiling height at the hitting position and through the full swing arc, because a single joist or duct in the wrong place matters more than the average height of the room. Measure twice on different days; garages and basements accumulate stuff, and the room you measure around the holidays is not the room you will have in March. Write the numbers down before you open a single product page, because every specification you read afterward should be checked against them.

Now the three rooms. These are the three spaces we see most often: a spare bedroom, a basement rec room, and a garage bay.

Room 1: the 10 by 12 spare room with a 9-foot ceiling

A 10-foot-wide, 12-foot-deep room with a 9-foot ceiling supports a full simulator build, but only with a launch monitor that needs 11 feet of depth or less. Usable depth is 11 feet (12 minus 1). Maximum screen width is 9 feet (10 minus 1).

Here is what survives the depth check at 11 feet:

Notice the pattern: every survivor sits beside the ball. Camera and photometric units that read the ball from the side need far less runway than radar units that track the ball's flight from behind. That is why the list runs from the SkyTrak ST MAX all the way to the Foresight QuadMAX. Depth does not discriminate by price. The PRGR Black Pocket (6-foot minimum) also clears the check, though it is a better fit for practice than for a full build at this level.

What dies in this room: the Garmin Approach R10 (needs 14 feet), the FlightScope Mevo Gen2 (16 feet), the Full Swing KIT (18 feet), and every overhead-mounted unit, because the Uneekor EYE XR, EYE XO, and EYE XO2, the ProTee VX, the TruGolf APOGEE, and the Foresight Falcon all require 16 feet. Even the Swing Caddie SC4 PRO misses by one foot at a 12-foot minimum.

Projection is comfortable here. A 9-foot-wide image from an Optoma GT2000HDR (0.496 throw ratio) needs about 4.5 feet of throw. From a BenQ TH671ST (0.69 to 0.83 ratio) it needs 6.2 to 7.5 feet. Both fit inside 11 feet of usable depth. Check any pairing in seconds with the projector calculator.

For the screen itself, a room this size points at the flexible end of the enclosure market. Room 2: the 12 by 15 basement with a 9-foot ceiling

A 12-foot-wide, 15-foot-deep basement room fits every beside-ball launch monitor plus two budget radar units, the Swing Caddie SC4 PRO and the Garmin Approach R10, but still excludes overhead-mounted monitors. Usable depth is 14 feet, and maximum screen width is 11 feet.

Those three extra feet of depth matter more than they sound. The room now clears the Swing Caddie SC4 PRO (12-foot minimum) and the Garmin Approach R10 (14-foot minimum), which opens up genuinely cheap full builds. Everything from the Room 1 list still fits.

Still excluded: the FlightScope Mevo Gen2 at 16 feet, the Full Swing KIT at 18 feet, and all six overhead-mounted monitors at 16 feet. The wider room also changes the picture. An 11-foot-wide image at a 0.496 throw ratio needs 5.46 feet of throw. At a 0.69 to 0.83 ratio it needs 7.6 to 9.1 feet, which leaves far less mounting margin inside a 14-foot usable depth. The fit math only confirms that the throw distance exists; where you stand and swing around the projector is yours to verify in the room. Enclosure options widen with the room. Room 3: the 14 by 20 garage bay with a 10-foot ceiling

A 14-foot-wide, 20-foot-deep space fits every launch monitor we sell for simulator use. Usable depth is 19 feet, which clears even the Full Swing KIT's 18-foot requirement, the deepest in our lineup. Maximum screen width is 13 feet.

This is the room where the decision flips from "what fits" to "what do I actually want." Behind-ball hybrid (radar plus camera) units like the FlightScope X3C (16-foot minimum) fit. Overhead camera units like the Uneekor EYE XO and EYE XO2 fit. Beside-ball photometric units fit with room to spare. At 19 feet of usable depth, the fit check stops being a filter and your budget takes over.

One caution at this size: a 13-foot screen is a big image, and big images demand brightness and resolution. A projector with a 0.5 throw ratio needs 6.5 feet of throw to fill 13 feet of width. Ceiling height, the number the fit rules don't check

Ceiling height is the one dimension the fit rules do not check: usable depth and screen width come from formulas, but whether you can swing a driver under an 8- or 9-foot ceiling is decided by a full-speed swing test at the hitting position, not by math. Before any purchase, take your longest club and swing it, at full speed, exactly where the mat will sit. If the clubhead touches anything, stop planning around that spot. Your height, posture, and swing plane are yours alone, and no formula substitutes for the test.

If nothing fits, practice gear still does

A room that fails the full-build check can still be a practice space. A net needs far less room than a screen and enclosure. The Net Return Home Golf Net (7 feet wide by 7 feet tall) and Pro Golf Net (8 feet by 7.5 feet) set up in spaces no enclosure would tolerate, and the Mini (5 feet by 6 feet) goes smaller still.

Pair a net with a practice launch monitor and you get real numbers without simulation. The PRGR Black Pocket needs only 6 feet of depth. The Swing Caddie SC200 Plus and SC300i are practice-only units: they report your numbers but do not drive simulator software, so treat them as range tools, never as the heart of a build. If a simulator is the goal, save the difference toward a room that passes the check.

Fit-check your own room in the builder
