Doppler radar (R10) uses microwave signals to track the ball after impact, then derives club data from the ball flight. It works indoors, outdoors, and on the range. Indoors, place the R10 about 6 to 8 feet behind the ball with around 10 feet of total room depth so the ball has flight time to read. Photometric cameras (R50) use three high-speed cameras to directly photograph the ball and club at impact -- so spin, launch angle, and club data are measured rather than estimated. The R50 also works in tight rooms thanks to ball offset alignment (2025 update). Cameras typically capture more direct data; radar is more portable and weather-tolerant.

No subscription is required to use either the R10 or R50 as a launch monitor. Driving Range, Training Mode, ball data, and club data all work out of the box with no recurring fees. A Garmin Golf membership ($99/year or $9.99/month) unlocks Home Tee Hero (43,000+ virtual courses), weekly tournaments, multiplayer up to 4 golfers, and cloud video / session storage. Yes. The R10 carries an IPX7 water rating -- handles rain, splashes, and incidental water exposure -- and is built for range, course, and backyard use. The R50 has an IPX3 rating for light splash resistance and is best protected from heavy rain. Both monitors work outdoors in daylight and have battery options (10 hours on R10, 4 hours on R50) so you can leave the AC adapter at home.

Minimum recommended: 10' wide x 8'6" high x 12' deep. For comfortable driver swings, 12' wide x 9' high x 16' deep is ideal. Garmin launch monitors sit on the floor beside the ball -- no ceiling sensors required, so ceiling height is less restrictive than overhead systems. The R50's 2025 ball offset alignment lets it read shots cleanly in compact 10-ft bays. The R10 sits 6 to 8 feet behind the ball; about 10 feet of total room depth is typical for indoor sim use. R50: Club data (club head speed, smash factor, club path, face angle, angle of attack) requires the included club face stickers -- one per clubhead, putter excluded. The R50 ships with 250 club face stickers in the box. Ball data is captured without any sticker.

No. Both the R10 and R50 track any standard golf ball -- no metallic dots, alignment markings, or special balls required. Use your regular game balls for the most realistic data.
