Putting on a golf simulator
Which launch monitors read the putt, which green to roll it on, and how to set the software to match it.
Three-putts cost strokes a 300-yard drive cannot buy back, and the simulator in your basement is the one practice green that is never closed, never wet and never crowded.
Putting is also where simulators differ most. Some launch monitors read a putt like a drive, some leave it to an auto-putt setting, and the surface under the ball decides whether it feels like a green.
Can you putt on a golf simulator? The short answer
Yes, when the launch monitor reads putts. Get the monitor, the surface speed and the software speed to agree.
Launch monitors
Five more putt in Foresight course play only. Not the R10, MLM2PRO or KIT.
Surface
A green with a published speed and real cups, from $829 (Fiberbuilt 4'x8'), so the real roll matches the screen.
Room behind the ball
Radar needs room behind the ball and flat roll in front; cameras read beside or above it.
Fastest check: the launch monitor comparison lines up every model we sell, and the putting greens collection has the surfaces in this guide.
Which launch monitors track putting?
Units with their own putting data or putting mode come first, then the Foresight-built units that putt in course play only. Each row gives what the unit reads and our price.
| Launch monitor | Putting | What it reads on a putt, and where the ball goes | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| FlightScope Mevo Gen2 | Included | Launch speed, total distance and ball direction. Radar sits 5 ft behind the ball; FlightScope recommends 8 ft of flat roll in front of the ball | $1,299 |
| SkyTrak ST MAX | Included | Putting Mode in SkyTrak's software, with Putt It Out, Auto Putt, Auto Fixed and Manual options and gimmes of 0, 3, 5 or 10 ft. Unit beside the ball | $1,695 |
| Uneekor EYE MINI LITE | Reads putts | Reads putter ball speed from 0.22 to 67 mph (manual); Uneekor names no putting analysis mode for it | $1,999 |
| Uneekor EYE MINI | Included | Built-in putting analysis for distance control, start line and consistency; putter ball speed 0.22 to 67 mph. Unit beside the ball | $2,999 |
| Garmin Approach R50 | Included | Putts play in the built-in simulator, with putting on or off, a gimme distance and a green speed setting. No sticker on the putter | $4,999.99 |
| NVISAGE NEO-E | Included | Shot and putt tracking, with a Putting mode in the free Murlie software | $5,500 |
| Uneekor EYE XR | Included | Putting data included at no extra cost; putter ball speed 0.44 to 67 mph. Overhead, nothing on the floor | $5,999 |
| Uneekor EYE XO | Included | Putting data included at no extra cost; putter ball speed 0.44 to 67 mph. Overhead | $6,499 |
| ProTee VX | Included | Reads putts from a 25 x 21 in detection area under the unit; ProTee says to avoid a white or very light surface for putting. Overhead | $6,500 |
| Uneekor EYE XO2 | Included | Putting data included at no extra cost; putter ball speed 0.44 to 67 mph. Overhead | $10,999 |
| FlightScope X3C | Included | Launch speed, total distance, direction, club speed, smash factor, roll and skid distance, bounce count and a ball speed profile. Radar 5 ft behind the ball, 30 ft of ball flight maximum | $13,495 |
| Foresight GCQuad | Data as an add-on | Putts in course play; Essential Putting Analysis is an optional add-on, and without it there is no putting analysis. Unit beside the ball | $15,999 |
| Foresight QuadMAX | Included | Foresight's product page lists Essential Putting Analysis in the box (its compare table calls the mode optional); putting mode switches on from the Tracking Mode menu. Unit beside the ball | $19,999 |
Prices are ours; putting features are from each maker's product page or manual. "Overhead" units mount to the ceiling and read a zone above the mat, so the putt can happen on the same spot as the drive.
Putts in course play, no putting data package
Foresight names these five among the units that run its Midland Putting Course. Its compare table shows no Essential Putting Analysis for the GC3 and Falcon; the other three are not on that table and list no putting analysis.
| Launch monitor | Putting | What Foresight publishes | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bushnell LPi | Course play | Named in the Midland Putting Course operating requirements; Bushnell's own pages make no putting claim | $1,999 |
| Bushnell Launch Pro | Course play | Named in the Midland Putting Course operating requirements; Bushnell's own pages make no putting claim | $2,999 |
| Foresight GC3S | Course play | Named in the Midland Putting Course operating requirements; no putting analysis listed | $3,799 |
| Foresight GC3 | Course play | Named in the Midland Putting Course operating requirements; compare table: Putting Analysis No | $6,999 |
| Foresight Falcon | Course play | Named in the Midland Putting Course operating requirements; Essential Putting Analysis not offered. Overhead | $16,999 |
Launch monitors that do not read putts, or do not say
- No putting: the Garmin Approach R10 (no putting in a virtual round; it adds 0 to 3 strokes by approach accuracy), the Rapsodo MLM2PRO (no built-in putting feature, Rapsodo says) and the Full Swing KIT (does not currently measure putting, Full Swing says).
- Too short to read: the Voice Caddie SC4 PRO starts measuring at 15 yards of carry; the SC300i and SC200 Plus start at 10 and 30 yards.
- No published putting claim: the TruGolf APOGEE. The NVISAGE N1's putting mode is still under development.
- What happens instead: the software scores the green for you: Garmin by approach accuracy, GSPro with its auto-putt settings for the MLM2PRO.
What putting data does a launch monitor give you?
A putting-capable launch monitor measures the ball first: launch speed and direction, with the roll measured or calculated depending on the unit. The flagships add skid, bounce and the putter itself: speed, path and face angle.
- Ball speed and roll: the basic putting read. FlightScope lists launch speed, total distance and direction; Uneekor reads putter ball speed; Foresight adds post-impact launch, skid and a calculated roll distance.
- Putter speed, face and path: the X3C reports club speed and smash factor on a putt; Foresight's Essential Putting Analysis reports club path, impact face angle and impact location on the QuadMAX and GCQuad.
- Which number first (our guidance): face to target, then path. Foresight's putting guide says path, face angle, delivered lie and impact point together set the start direction; in our experience the face is the one most golfers fix fastest.
- Skid and roll: Foresight reports post-impact launch, skid and calculated roll on the QuadMAX and GCQuad; the X3C reports skid distance, roll distance, bounce count and bounce distance. Less skid and an earlier roll is the usual coaching target (our guidance).
- Numbers need a stroke to fix: the Putting Arc guides the putter head along an arc; the Putting Bar sits under the arms, connecting triceps to chest so the bigger muscles control the stroke. Pair one with the data.
Which putting green or mat belongs in a simulator bay?
A hitting strip is built to take a wedge; a putting green is built to roll a putt at a known speed. Fiberbuilt publishes its speed (stimp 9); Tour Links adds contour pads for break. Four picks below.

Fiberbuilt 4'x10' Putting Green
- Size: 4 ft wide, 10 ft long, 2 metal cups
- Base: tool-free modular rubber foundation on a firm, level floor
- Pick it when: it runs beside the hitting mat in one bay

Fiberbuilt 10'x10' Putting Green
- Size: 10 ft square, 3 metal cups
- Base: the same tool-free rubber foundation, indoor or outdoor
- Pick it when: the bay is wide enough for three angles

Tour Links 4'x12' Golf Putting Mat
- Size: 4 ft wide, 12 ft long, floating cups and flags
- Base: snap-together polymer panels; rolls up or comes apart
- Pick it when: you want breaking putts from the contour pads

Tour Links 8'x12' Golf Putting Mat
- Size: 8 ft wide, 12 ft long, floating cups and flags
- Base: the same panel system at 190 lb, so it stays put
- Pick it when: two golfers putt at once, or the green is the room's centerpiece
Where the launch monitor sits decides where the green goes. Three placements, each from the maker's own setup figures:
Radar behind the ball
5 ft behind the ball; the Mevo Gen2 wants 8 ft of flat roll in front of the ball.
Camera beside the ball
With the unit in place, position the green so each putt starts inside its hitting zone.
Camera overhead
Nothing on the floor; the VX reads putts from a 25 x 21 in zone, so the green can sit where the mat is.
Placement rules, two from the makers and two of ours:
- Firm and level: Fiberbuilt wants its greens on concrete, packed gravel, asphalt or a solid deck, never on bare ground or grass.
- Not white: ProTee's putting guidance for the VX is to avoid a white or very light surface under the ball.
- Room for the roll (our rule): the Mevo Gen2 wants 8 ft of flat roll in front of the ball, so point the long side of the green at the screen. The X3C allows up to 30 ft of ball flight.
- Our rule: putt from the spot the launch monitor reads. The QuadMAX's zone is about 18 x 14 in (14 x 14 in with club tracking on), centered 22 in from the unit, so mark that spot on the green and start every putt there.
How do you set up putting in simulator software?
Look for three putting controls: a switch that turns putting on or hands it to the computer, a gimme distance, and a green speed. Garmin, SkyTrak and Foresight publish theirs; the Garmin R10's rounds have no putting at all.
| Software | Putting switch | Gimmes | Green speed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Garmin Golf on the Approach R50 | Putting on or off; off adds 0 to 3 strokes by approach accuracy. Putting is off in Garmin's weekly tournaments | Gimme Distance (the manual names the setting, no scale) | Green Speed (named, no scale) |
| SkyTrak software on the ST MAX | Putt It Out, Auto Putt (tour-average result), Auto Fixed (1, 2 or 3 putts), Auto two putt, or Manual input | 0, 3, 5 or 10 ft | Slow, Normal, Fast or Lightning |
| Foresight FSX Play (QuadMAX, GCQuad, GC3) | Auto Putt (pre-set putts per green), Fast Putting (one putt, a tenth of a stroke per foot left) or Manual Putting | Gimme distance for the round; a Show Gimme Zone toggle | Stimp slider from 5 to 15, default 10, plus green firmness |
Garmin and SkyTrak settings are from each owner's manual; the Foresight row is from the FSX Play user manual. On the QuadMAX itself, putting mode switches on from the Tracking Mode menu.
- Match the speed to the surface (our guidance): a Fiberbuilt green runs at stimp 9, so set FSX Play's stimp slider to 9, or start SkyTrak at Normal, then move it until an on-screen 10-footer and a real one need the same stroke.
- Gimmes are a time setting, not a skill setting: a 3 ft gimme keeps a family round moving; 0 ft turns the round into putting practice.
- Auto-putt is for the models that cannot read a putt: on an R10, MLM2PRO or KIT the round still scores the green, it just does not ask you to hole out.
- Third-party software: GSPro's partners include Garmin, Foresight, Uneekor, FlightScope, Bushnell, Full Swing KIT, Rapsodo and ProTee VX. Without putting data it auto-putts: Rapsodo points MLM2PRO owners to Auto Putt Random, Auto Putt Fixed or the manual Pick Your Putt.
Which putting setup fits you?
Start from what you own, then the budget, then the room.
- You already own an R50, ST MAX, Mevo Gen2, EYE MINI or a Uneekor overhead: turn putting on in your software and add a green with a known speed. Course play on the R50 and ST MAX needs the maker's membership.
- You are buying under $2,000 and want to putt: the Mevo Gen2 at $1,299 (5 ft behind the ball) or the SkyTrak ST MAX at $1,695 beside it.
- You want skid, roll and putter data, not just ball data: the FlightScope X3C (skid, roll, bounce, putter speed) or a QuadMAX with Essential Putting Analysis.
- You are building a bay with nothing on the floor: the Uneekor EYE XR, EYE XO and EYE XO2 or the ProTee VX read putts from the ceiling, so the green can sit where the mat is.
- You own a GC3, GC3S, Falcon, Launch Pro or LPi: you putt in Foresight's course play already; putter and roll data need a GCQuad with the add-on or a QuadMAX.
- You own an R10, MLM2PRO or KIT: let the software auto-putt, and practice the stroke on a green with the putting aids instead of chasing a feature the unit does not have.
- The room is tight: a 4 x 10 ft green needs a 4 ft strip beside the mat; the room size guide has the enclosure and bay widths to plan it around.
- Best launch monitor for putting (our pick): on a budget, the Mevo Gen2 at $1,299; for detailed putting analysis, the X3C or the QuadMAX.
Bottom line
Putting on a simulator works when three parts agree: a launch monitor that reads the putt, a green with a known speed, and software set to that speed. Ours start at $1,299 and $829.
- Best value that putts: FlightScope Mevo Gen2, $1,299, plus a Fiberbuilt 4'x10' green, $989.
- Deepest putting analysis (our pick): FlightScope X3C or Foresight QuadMAX, with skid, roll and putter data.
- Cleanest bay: a Uneekor overhead or the ProTee VX, putting read from the ceiling on the same spot as the drive.
